Cliff erosion

As part of our topic on coasts we have been looking at how some coastal features are formed.
We used sand to build a headland and experimented to see how waves affect the cliffs.
We tried using dry sand at first but it wouldn't stay in place so we added water.
building a headland
The waves start to wear away the rock at the foot of the cliff. This is called erosion.
More and more rock is worn away as the waves and stones hit the cliff until eventually ...
it collapses!

Other features formed by the waves are caves, arches and stacks.
Watch a video of how we made them.

We made the Old Man of Hoy!

Watch a BBC video of caves, arches and stacks being formed.
